Creative Handicraft: Potholder from Scrap Fabrics

Make a creative handicraft if you need a gift for someone special or just want to unwind. Crafting can be therapeutic when you are stressed, and it can also result in a useful or decorative item. Everyone is creative in some way, and with modern kits and patterns, a creative handicraft does not have to end in disappointment.

If you have a sewing machine, you can learn to make a unique handicraft that will make a useful and appreciated gift. Pot Holders are an excellent beginner sewing project that can be made from scrap fabric or unwanted clothing as well as a small amount of double-fold bias tape. Here are the easy steps to making this creative handicraft.

To make the front and the back of the potholder, cut two 8-inch (21-cm) squares of fabric. For these pieces, choose coordinating fabrics that complement your kitchen. To make it easier, you can make an 8-inch square pattern from a piece of cardboard to use as a pattern. To make the filling, cut more 8-inch squares of any old fabric. The fabric square, stack should be thick enough to protect you from a hot pot, but thin enough to be flexible and sewn through.

Stack all layers so that the outer layers face out and the filler layers face in. To keep the layers together, insert a couple of large straight pins through all of them. Sew directly across the middle of the stack. Sew across the center once more, perpendicular to the first stitching. You'll have divided the square into four equal parts. Sew across the stack from corner to corner again, and then from the opposite corner to corner. The layers should now be joined and stable.

Trim the raw edges of your creative handicraft with scissors to make all the layers even at the edges. One folded edge of the bias tape should be opened out. Although wider bias tape appears to be easier to use, narrow bias tape produces a neater finished product. Starting at one corner, align the tape's edges with the edges of the potholder and begin stitching through all layers along the first fold line, which should be about 1/4 inch from the edge. Stitch neatly and slowly around the edge, attaching the opened tape all the way around until you reach the beginning corner. Remove the bias tape, leaving 3 inches (7 cm) to make a hanging loop.

Fold the bias tape over the raw edge so that the middle fold matches the outside of the potholder and the other fold hides the bias tape's raw edge. For best results, hand sew the binding down, forming a loop at the end of your creative handicraft.

If you have a sewing machine, this potholder is just one example of a creative handicraft you can make. When completed, you will have a useful item made entirely of recycled materials. Feel free to share or keep this creative handicraft for yourself.

Make Your Own Pride Paper Wreath

Celebrate Pride Month with this beautiful do-it-yourself paper wreath. We're going to show you how making this masterpiece using Paper Source ornamental documents in detail! Here are the materials you'll need to make this wreath: cutter of paper (preferably a slide cutter or guillotine cutter) scissors double-sided tape, foam wreath (1.4′′ x 9.8′′) decorative paper in.

Step-By-Step Tutorial

Here are the materials you will need to make this wreath:

  • Scissors
  • Two-sided tape
  • Foam wreath (1.4″ x 9.8″)
  • 14 Straight pins with ball heads
  • A variety of coloured decorative paper (7 colours in total)
  • Cutter of paper (preferably a slide cutter or guillotine cutter)

Guidelines:

  • Begin by cutting down your paper strips. Each strip should be 1 inch wide by 12 inches long. Depending on the size of your wreath form, you'll need anywhere from 20 to 30 strips of each colour.
  • You'll start by making accordion folded "snakes" with one colour at a time.

How to Fold an Accordion:

  • Begin with two strips of the same colour.
  • Strip 1 should be placed vertically on the surface.
  • Place strip 2 horizontally on top of strip 1 and secure with double-sided tape.
Begin by folding the strips back and forth over each other in the order listed below:
  • Step 1: Fold up strip 1
  • Step 2: Fold strip 2 left
  • Step 3: Fold strip one in half
  • Step 4: To the right, fold strip 2.
  • Repeat steps 1-4 until you've used up all of your paper strips.
  • Remove any excess paper with scissors and secure the loose flap with double-sided tape.
Your accordion strips should look something like this:
  • Continue making these with the remaining one-color strips and connecting them with double-sided tape to form one long'snake.'
  • When stretched out, each snake should be about a yard long.
  • Rep this procedure for each additional colour (i.e. orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink)
  • You should have a total of seven snakes.

Once you've finished each colour snake, attach it to the foam wreath as follows:
    • Use only one colour at a time.
    • Attach the snake's tail to the wreath with a straight pin.
    • Begin winding the snake around the wreath form, making sure that each rotation is snug against the previous one.
    • When you've finished one colour, use a straight pin to secure the end to the wreath.
    • Rep these steps with each colour until all 7 snakes wrap around the wreath form.

      Remember:

You may need to make adjustments to fit all of the paper onto the wreath; the goal is for the accordion folds to nestle into each other so that no white foam is visible.

Your finished product should look something like this:

This wreath can be hung on your door or used as home decor. Change the colours of your paper according to the season, or make a graduation wreath using school colours. The options are limitless!
